Six Volkswagen Models Named IIHS Top Safety Picks
As is expected from the iconic German manufacturer, it’s shaping up to be a landmark year for Volkswagen yet again. We’ve learned that six Volkswagen models have been named IIHS Top Safety Picks for the 2017 model year, so we’ll let you know a little bit about each one!
How is the IIHS Top Safety Pick award designated?
Every year, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety administers tests that prove a vehicle’s ability to hold up and keep passengers safe in the event of a crash. These tests are given in five distinct areas, shown below:
- Small overlap front
- Moderate overlap front
- Roof strength
- Head restraints and seats
Vehicles are evaluated on a four point scale ranging from “Poor” to “Good.” To be named a Top Safety Pick, vehicles must score “Good” in all five areas. Also, the Top Safety Pick Plus designation is awarded to vehicles that also offer front crash prevention systems. Vehicles with Top Safety Pick Plus designations also must offer headlights that do not have excessive glare.
