2019 Volkswagen Atlas Review
With room for the whole family and lots of safety features, the Volkswagen Atlas is a dependable midsize SUV. How can you be sure it’s the right one for you and your family though? To help drivers in Little Rock, Benton, and Conway decide, Owens Murphy Volkswagen looks at what it has to offer in this 2019 VW Atlas review.
The VW Atlas comes with three rows of seats and space for up to seven people. Whether you’re behind the wheel or relaxing in the back, you’ll be able to get comfortable in this spacious SUV. The front row features 41.3 inches of headroom and 41.5 inches of legroom. The pair of 3rd-row seats also lets you stretch out with 40.4 inches of headroom and 37.6 inches of legroom.
You’ll also be able to pack lots of bags and boxes. This SUV features plenty of cargo room with folding seats in both the second and third rows. With the backseats flat, you’ll have 53.5 cubic feet of space. Folding both rows down gives you up to 96.8 cubic feet of cargo room. Plus, an available Hands-free Easy Open power liftgate makes it easy to pack your SUV when you’ve got your hands full.
To carry all that cargo, the VW Atlas offers a choice between two versatile engines. The base powertrain is a 2.0L TSI® 4-cylinder turbocharged engine that gets up to 235 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The second option is a 3.6L V6 that delivers up to 276 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. This engine lets you haul some extra cargo by towing up to 5,000 pounds.
Both powertrains work with an 8-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic® and Sport mode. Front-wheel drive comes standard, but 4MOTION® all-wheel drive with Active Control is also available. It lets you adapt to your driving conditions with four selectable driving modes.
The VW Atlas is made with a strong safety cage that features front and rear crumple zones. These are designed to absorb force during a collision and redirect it away from the interior. Inside, you’ll be protected by six airbags. The advanced system features front and side thorax airbags for the driver and front passenger, plus Side Curtain Protection® airbags that cover both rows of seats.
There are also driver-assistance features that can help prevent accidents. You’ll have more awareness of what’s around your SUV thanks to technology like an Active Blind Spot Monitor, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), and a Forward Collision Warning with Autonomous Emergency Braking.
You’ll even have safety features helping you after an accident. If the Intelligent Crash Response System (ICRS) detects that the airbags have deployed, it will automatically activate the hazard lights, turn off the fuel pump, and unlock the doors.
